SPORTS UPDATES
MMI Girls are the
Division III 2007
DODDS-European Girls Volleyball Champions!!
MMI Varsity girls team,
lead by coach Antonia Ciuffreda traveled to Kaiserslautern, Germany to
participate in the European Championships held from November 1 to 3. This
season the team finished second in the American Schools in Italy League
(ASIL) division behind the powerhouse Aviano. From the first day of practice
all the way through the tournament, Coach Ciuffreda challenged the team
to play at their full potential. She gave them the inspiration and the
skills to pull it all together. At the final game of the tournament, MMI
girls defeated the favored, undefeated German team Baumholder. According
to Charlie Reed of the Stars and Stripes newspaper, “It was Marymount,
a private school in Italy, that got hot and stayed that way.” MMI
stopped Baumholder after 5 tough games; 25-7, 27-29, 25-11, 13-25,15-4.
Rei Searle, Monique Boliko, and Ilaria Montanari were selected for the
all tournament team. Ilaria Montanari a sophomore was selected Most Valuable
Player for Division III.
Boys Mediterranean Volleyball Championships 2007
Marymount International
School Boys Volleyball team has improved year after year, finishing this
season with 3 wins and 3 losses. Under the leadership of Coach Francesco
Castiglione, the team traveled to Aviano, Italy for the Mediteranean Championships,
which took place from November 1 to 3. The team played well and made it
all the way to the quarter finals. Everyone noticed Saidi Mwanunda’s
skill on the court. He was honored to be selected to the All Tournament
Team.
Cross Country Championships
2007
With each 5 kilometer race,
Cross Country runners have to battle the elements, wind, rain, heat, cold,
and the internal voice that constantly gives an internal update on the
muscle that aches and the lungs that are burning with each breath and
can’t breathe any harder. Coach Bruno Leotta has been inspiring
and training runners here at MMI for over 10 years. This year Bruno escorted
the MMI girls’ team and a lone MMI male freshman to Heidelberg,
Germany for finals on October 27, 2007. There, sophomore Costanza Uslenghi
once again showed her inner strength, finishing 2nd for Division III girls
with a time of 22:32.68. The girls team finished 4th. Nathanael Dejene
placed 14th with a respectable time of 19:50.83, just 1 minute and 22
seconds behind the winner.
Tennis Championships
2007
MMI had one of the strongest
tennis teams ever this year! Coach Marco Masciole took a full team to
the DoDDS European Tennis Championships in Wiesbaden, Germany, which took
place from October 25 to 27. Playing in the Men’s Singles, freshman
Mattia Bennassi had an undefeated season going into the tournament and
was seeded #7. In Women’s Singles, sophomore Martina Diana, also
undefeated, was seeded #8. Both did very well in the tournament, each
reaching the quarterfinals.
In the Women’s Doubles, sophomores Yuki Sasaki and Aine Tyrrell
did their very best and also reached quarterfinals at the tournament.
In the Men’s Doubles, seniors Alessandro Trombetta and Zein Nour
took 4th place out of 26 teams!
